Arturo products represents a 3+ year investment and Research and Development inside American Family Insurance.
We’re passionate about eliminating the complexity of extracting insights from ensemble data sets and specialize in being able to deliver accurate predictions in formats that are immediately useful inside our customer’s business systems.
Arturo is headquartered in Chicago, IL and has representation across North America to support both the Insurance and Re-Insurance Industry. Arturo has recently added to its locations a presence in Ottawa, Canada.

In this role, he has executive leadership for the Enterprise Risk Management division and responsibility for the strategic leadership of all risk management and loss reserving functions for the property and casualty insurance operations including: Enterprise Risk Analysis and Insights, Business Continuity, Corporate Insurance, Capital Management, Loss Reserving and Catastrophe Management. The division is responsible for the definition, execution and governance of the risk framework; risk appetite and tolerance; risk management and reporting; group capital assessment and stress testing; and catastrophe management for American Family. In his prior role, operating as American Family’s Enterprise Catastrophe Management Director, he was responsible for the enterprise-wide catastrophe risk strategy. Prior to joining American Family, Joseph was the Vice President of Catastrophe Management at Homesite Insurance Group in Boston, MA and was the Head of Global Modeling at Allianz Global Corporate; Specialty in Chicago, IL and Munich, Germany. Joseph has a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Saint John University in Collegeville, MN and is a member of the North American CRO Council. Joe and his wife Sharon, live in Waunakee with their two daughters.

MartySmuinChief Operating Officer, WeaveMarty Smuin currently serves as the COO of Weave Communications, and has more than 25 years of management experience focusing primarily on GTM strategy and execution, including business and corporate development, sales and marketing, operations and support; spending much of that time in senior executive roles. His industry experience ranges from wireless telecommunications, storage management and application software, super computing, aerospace, media and ecommerce. Much of Marty’s experience has been gleaned in the international business arena, amassing considerable experience in opening, and expanding market share throughout EMEA and APAC. Marty has also worked extensively with start-ups from concept to exit and has helped raise tens of millions of dollars from angel investors, VC’s and private equity firms. Sunir is also currently an Operating Partner at Atlantic Bridge Capital, a transatlantic venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, with over $1.5B in assets under management. Sunir is an advisor and board member to industry defining companies such as Vectra and Stratio, as well as having led investments in companies with innovative technology such as Devo, helping them develop and disrupt legacy markets. Sunir was the CEO of UBmatrix the creator of eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL), now the standard for business information exchange. The standard has revolutionized the regulatory reporting of financial information and risk globally. UBmatrix, the leading software company in this market was acquired by R.R. Donnelley (NASDAQ:RRD). Sunir was a founder of Cassatt, an early cloud computing pioneer, which fueled the emergence of SaaS and was acquired by Computer Associates. Sunir was also co-founder and CEO of E-Stamp. He is credited with inventing the market and technology for Internet postage and payment, leading E-Stamp Corporation to a successful IPO. In his career, Sunir has held senior management positions at Oracle, Microsoft and at Novell in Silicon Valley, Seattle, Paris, Frankfurt and London. He also has had various engineering roles at the European Space Agency and Honeywell. Sunir holds a BS Honors Degree in Physics from the University of Birmingham, and an MS in Computer Systems from the Cranfield Institute of Technology, both in the UK, and resides in Silicon Valley, California.

In this role, Marty is charged with melding new and existing data sources with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other new technologies to drive insurance value and transformation. His team’s most significant accomplishments include the use of natural language processing to uncover a $100M+ reinsurance opportunity and work on the creation of an American Family Insurance-affiliated online small business insurer. Marty also led the creation and spin out of Arturo.ai, a deep learning startup that uses image recognition for insurance and other applications in commercial and residential property. Prior to his tenure at American Family, Marty worked in the strategy consulting practice of IBM’s Global Business Services unit. With IBM, Marty consulted on technology and other strategies with large companies across a wide range of industries, both within the. U.S. and internationally. Marty began his career as a commodity and weather research and modeling manager for global consumer products manufacturer Mars, Inc. During his time with Mars, Marty developed climate, crop yield, and commodity price forecasts for the diverse mix of agricultural raw materials that Mars purchased. Marty has an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MBA in Strategy and Finance from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. in Biology from Wartburg College.
